LET'S STAMP OUT SCAMS!
ARE YOU AS SICK OF SCAMS AS I AM??

The purpose of this page is to keep the Internet community informed about safety on the web.  Viruses and worms will remain a threat, but we can protect ourselves.  Aside from using a good anti-virus program, we must always be vigilant.  Our goal is to warn you of new viruses detected, as well as remind you of key safety issues on the web.  We'd love to hear your feedback.  Drop us a line in our guestbook.  Be sure to check our Tip of the week at the bottom of this page!

Anti-Virus Software

Using Anti-Virus Software:

There are many anti-virus programs available.  Generally, they detect viruses on storage disks, such as floppies and files that have been downloaded from the Internet.  These programs prevent viruses from infecting your PC in the first place.

Most anti-virus packages can be set up to scan your system regularly, but you should also get into the good habit of running the program every time you want to use a disk or download a file.

If a virus does make its way onto your computer, the software will alert you by bringing up a warning on the screen.  At this point you must use the disinfecting function in the anti-virus program.  This is normally a straightforward process, performed by following the on-screen instructions given by the program.  Sometimes, the infected item cannot be repaired.  In this case you should delete the file or, in the case of a program, uninstall then replace it.

Keep Up To Date:

Because more than 400 new viruses appear every month, it is vital to keep your software up to date.  The best anti-virus packages can be updated by downloading new information from their related Web sites.  Check your software for details on how to do this.

Worst Case Scenario:

With proper use of an anti-virus program, you should be able to detect and remove any viruses before they cause really serious damage.  The worst situation you could find yourself in, is that a virus has destroyed the contents of your hard disk.

In such a case you will have to restore the hard disk from your original system disks.  This is like restoring your computer to its original state, as it was on the day you bought it.  The original settings for it will be restored, but you will probably have lost all your documents and data files.
